Day of Light

Celebrate the International Day of Light (IDL) with Us!

The Optical Society of Korea (OSK) proudly serves as the National Node representing Korea in celebrating the 'International Day of Light (IDL)'.
The IDL, declared by UNESCO on November 14, 2017, continues the legacy of the International Year of Light (IYL) in 2015, highlighting the critical role of optical technology in shaping our world. During the IYL, over 100 million participants from 140 countries joined various events to celebrate the global impact of light-based technologies.
Celebrated annually on May 16, the IDL commemorates Theodore H. Maiman’s groundbreaking achievement of generating the first laser on May 16, 1960. The inaugural IDL was held on May 16, 2018, and its importance continues to grow each year. For more information, visit the website (https://www.lightday.org/).

This year, in 2025, OSK will host a special public lecture and celebratory event on May 16 as part of the 13th Asia-Pacific Laser Symposium (APLS 2025), organized by Quantum Electronics Division of OSK, in Seogwipo, Jeju, South Korea

We invite you to join us in commemorating this meaningful occasion. Your participation and support will make the event even more impactful.
Stay tuned for more details, and we look forward to celebrating the power of light with you!
